Sorry..I tried something new, and the

Tucker post came out twice and some

text cut off...but you get some idea!!!!

My Favorite Tenor Tucker once told his dear friend Ed Rosen, "I do not like to bunt..I hit home runs." Believe me he "bunted" a lot...The legato was there..despite some complaints...so what if he held "bellezzze" in Tosca a bit longer, and there was evidence of the cantorail training and some sobs......so...big deal.....Ever hear of GIGLI?? You take the man as a whole...a fabulous lirico-dramatico voice..rang through the Met like a golden tone of incredible size and beauty at the same time. I used to go ballistic when he dropped the sword in Forza, came up front, and let out that glorious B at the end of the "Sleale" duet. I also adored the act 2 Chenier "Credi al destino," showing the legato that some deaf people did not hear. I saw him maybe 65 times..NEVER gave a bad performance in my view...gave 1000%...perhaps too much after the first heart attack, where George Jellinek asked him to take it a bit easier.NO WAY! The 1964 Cav w.Farrell echoes in my mind so vividly...especially, "Per me,pregate Iddio." Sorry he did not get to do the Juive at the Met.His last perf.from Spain show he could have gone on at least 15 years more. Thank you, dear Richard Tucker........there was NO ONE like you!!!!!!!! I was at the unveiling of the monument at Lincoln Center. I believe pigeons are scared to death to go near the statute..They have as much respect as do millions of others.... Love Charlie

Mario did guest Lescaut a year before "official" Met debut.

You hear what he was...not s Gerard Souzay!!!!

We went nuts over this great man!!!!!!!

Category:general -- posted at: 4:14pm EDT

Hey, Mario.I was there in 1958 when you

RAN out of the tent on "Trahison." You KNEW

it was a broadcast so you sang to the mikes!

The two of them looked better than Victor Mature

and Hedy Lamar.

Category:general -- posted at: 4:07pm EDT

First singer I ever saw (1951)…..first of 40 times.

I recall "white teeth" coming toward me in Aida,

my first opera ever.  He was a GOD!!!!!!!!

Huge voice from bottom to top.A "bronze column of

sound"..Unforgettable man!  Came out stage door

once and said, "Hello, boys" in my poor ear. I

never recovered!!!!!

Category:general -- posted at: 4:04pm EDT

Category:general -- posted at: 7:37pm EDT

Our new hero!!!! Camarena is now "King of the bises."

He is something extraordinary in our opera world.

Category:general -- posted at: 7:28pm EDT

Sorry Zinka and Renata,....Antonietta Stella

1956 Met debut still remains my great

favorite.Big,luscious voice..ADORE!!

Category:general -- posted at: 6:26pm EDT

I had only heard Caruso do this aria

and suddenly here is my beloved

favorite singer, Piotr Beczala, doing

it. This guy thrills me more than

his idol,Nicolai Gedda. Before he

did his first Lohengrin,I did give

him the CD set of Gedda's only one.

Very few singers today remind me of

my "Golden Age" from my youth.

Category:general -- posted at: 5:49pm EDT

But WHY did he decide to RUIN one

of the greatest voices of the century??

He started to "open" the top too

low...Perche?He was  GOD when

in his prime!!!!

Category:general -- posted at: 3:46pm EDT

I was there when Licia (at 57) kissed the

Met stage after her aria. She was born 7/22/09.

Died at 105. I walked with tiny Licia at a

Soviero affair..Like walking with history.

Category:general -- posted at: 5:48pm EDT

Category:general -- posted at: 12:14pm EDT

  Come on, Enrico...why didn't you

want to sing with him??? This is

  UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Category:general -- posted at: 1:44pm EDT

Along with the Rosenkavalier trio,

this for me is the most SUBLIME

opera scene...just the way Jones

WALKS at 7:00 makes me cry a river!

Category:general -- posted at: 1:24pm EDT

  This wonderful man died onstage

at only 51.(I saw Warren die on stage

at 49). I can see,from 1957, how Martha

Moedl sank into his arms in Walkure.

Wonderful Wozzeck(excellent English.)

Warem voice and great artist.

When I "discovered" Diana in 1977,

I felt she was reminiscent of the

Tebaldi days. We have been close friends

ever since, and my frustration is that

she should be way up there as to

"famous" divas...but that's life. She

and Alberto Cupido are superb

here. I hope you enjoy them.

Diana is a renowned teacher, and the voice

is still there!  So happy to have known her.

Ira Siff,Met broadcast commentator in the

great Tosca scene. I like especially when

she (he?? It??) finds the Salvocondotto

and the Yiddish "E Avanti a Lui" cracks me

up.  Ira is a great coach and he KNOWS

opera traditions, so Ira (Vera) is perfect

as one of the hosts on Met broadcasts.

Diana and I had a long talk yesterday

about style and today's lack of divas

with kind of emotion of a Muzio,a Zeani,

a SOVIERO exhibited. SAD!!!!

Category:general -- posted at: 1:00am EDT

I may have posted this, but if you

want to cry like me...you watch this.

She would come forward slowly on

"Ma quando vien lo sgelo" (note a

kind of "breath" on the "Ma" and then let out

a Birgit Nilssonian top note on "E mio" that

threw us on the floor. (Remember, we were

standees.)….I miss her so.....Called her on

every birthday....NO ONE in my view had the

combination of beauty of tone and WAGNERIAN volume.
